Consider the following thought exercise: for every country in Africa, what is the population?
United States: 320 million; Canada: 36 million; Brazil, 246.3 million; China, 1.39 billion; Russia, 144.8 million; Ethiopia, 98.7 million
It's not that much harder than you might think! For more information on how this process works and what it can teach us about international demography in general see this blog post about African demographics by Emma Haddon-Welch.
The average age in Egypt is 10.7 years. For the majority of the time since Egypt's independence, life expectancy has been relatively stable, although there was a substantial increase in the 1990s. In 2011 it was a staggering 80.51 years for males and 76.63 years for females.
About 92% of the Egyptian population are urban. Furthermore, almost half of the population of Egypt live in cities with over 500,000 people. The largest city is Cairo. It has a population of nearly 15 million people. The second largest city is Alexandria, with a little over 4 million people.
All these statistics make Egypt one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Furthermore, there are great opportunities for many international companies to establish there new branches or even open offices in this country which will contribute greatly to its GDP growth rate.
Egypt is on track to achieve 7% GDP growth in 2014 thanks to "the economic reform program pursued by the government". This means that the Egyptian economy will be growing by about 4.6% per year on average until 2020.
However, this economic growth is heavily dependent on the ongoing political instability in Cairo and the ongoing conflict with Egyptian insurgents since July 2013. All this is eating away at the country's GDP and curtails foreign investments and tourism revenues which are vital to sustain Egypt's economic growth.
